Flat roof coating applications in the U.S. are made up primarily of acrylic elastomeric coatings. One of the facts about this product is that it is made with organic materials and after application it starts to degrade right away. The time frame for the material to erode away from exposure to weather might be years and years, but at some point it may weather away completely. It comes down to providing accurate product information to the owner. On occasion roofers are providing information that is not true.
It is a fact that around the country roofs covered with acrylic elastomeric coating fail in some fashion or another. One of the failures that occurs quite a lot is when the product emulsifies in ponding water. This issue ends up where the roof coating fails, the homeowner’s roof leaks and a roofer gets paid to fix the problem.
Roof Coating Products Definitions
Acrylic Elastomeric Roof Coatings
This product is a water based roof coating. When used for roofing it is a liquid-applied monolithic (no seams) completely adhered, elastomeric membrane, formed in situ (when it is applied it stays in the same position) when installed on a roof. It is applied very thickly, measuring 15 to 30 millimeters thick.
Materials similar to acrylic elastomeric roof coatings are EPDM (45 mils thick), HypaloR and PVC (60 mils thick). The difference is that acrylic elastomeric roof coating is liquid, it comes in large pails and when it is applied it forms in-situ. Similar to the other products mentioned it creates a very, very hard membrane, but unlike them, it has no seam. On top of that fact, it is fully adhered, requiring no mechanical attachment mechanism.
Polyurethane Roof Coatings
Coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomer (CASE) many times are made with polyurethanes and the number of ways they can be put to use in applications is extensive. These coating and sealing products look better and last longer due to polyurethane. Products made with this material feature bonds that are stronger and seals that are amazing. This product can be shaped, it is lighter than most metal products and it handles stressful environments well.
Silicone Roof Coatings
To bring this product to the forefront with an accurate scientific description is to feature the chemical makeup of it. Silicones are made of a silicon-oxygen structure (-Si-O-Si-O-Si-O-) and they are inorganic polymers. The (-Si-O-Si-O-Si-O-) combination include silicon atoms connected together with side groups. Different combinations of the Si-O side groups and chain lengths with crosslinking combine to make silicone into several different products and materials, of which include rubber, liquid and gel like products. Silicones are very diverse. Products made with silicone are used in rubber type products, greases, oils and they are stable in heat, repel water and can withstand harmful chemicals.
